To counter the effective anit-aircraft missile defenses over North Vietnam in the late 1960s, the US Air Force adapted it’s hottest strike fighter/bomber for the dangerous but effective mission of SAM suppression. The F-105G took over the "Wild Weasel" role and performed exceptionally for the duration of the Vietnam War, and for the decade after.
